The making of MYUZE: who, why, what, where...
Who?
MYUZE was founded by Madelon Spijker. Madelon studied Fashion Design at the ArtEZ Institute for the Arts. She also received her Master's degree from the Fashion Institute of Arnhem, for which she presented her designs at the Haute Couture week in Paris in 2004. Soon after graduation she won the Robijn Fashion Award, the
most prestigious award for fashion design in the Netherlands. The prize was to design a capsule collection for Amsterdam's luxury department store ‘de Bijenkorf’. Madelon's collection was sold out within a week! She continued to work as designer for contemporary womenswear brands, specializing in drapery and fine woven fabrics like silk and further developing the keen eye for refinement and detail which hallmarks all her creations.
Why?
Throughout the years Madelon has noticed how true artisanship is slowly disappearing. In her career as a designer she has seen many beautiful and intriguing materials, but unfortunately these fabrics have rarely made it to a collection, simply because they were considered too expensive or the lead time too long.
This was the reason Madelon decided to set up her own label MYUZE, to support traditional craftsmanship and to show a wider public the amazing and diverse qualities of materials. It has always been her dream to inspire others, to create positive energy through her designs.
What?
For now, her focus is on the creation of leather bags, since there is much to improve in the production of leather. Many fashion brands buy their leather from Asia, as it is most cost-efficient. However, they have no knowledge of its exact origin, how the cattle has been treated or how strict the chemical tanning process was controlled. With her creations for MYUZE Madelon aims to show that it is possible to make a product which is both ethically and commercially viable. Greater investment in the quality of a product, demands greater creativity in other aspects of the business, to still offer an affordable product. So, for example, the MYUZE look book consists of sketches instead of pictures.
Where?
All MYUZE bags are handcrafted by Madelon herself at her studio in the heart of Amsterdam.

Store owner Merryn Leslie is a talented stylist and fashion editor who has worked for Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and i-D magazine. She is driven in encouraging a modern fashion culture that is both considerate of humankind and of nature as a whole.
